Sounders equalize in second half to draw Portland Timbers in Seattle’s first preseason match

The Seattle Sounders drew 1-1 with the Portland Timbers on Saturday in a preseason friendly in Tucson, Ariz.

Timbers forward Fanendo Adi scored on a header in the 17th minute off a free kick from Diego Valeri. The Sounders leveled the match in the 71st minute on a Harry Shipp penalty kick after Irvin Parra was fouled on a through ball from Zach Mathers.

A total of 22 different players saw the field for the Sounders on Saturday with goalkeeper Tyler Miller the only player to go the full 90 minutes.

Clint Dempsey started and played for the first time since late August while recovering from an irregular heartbeat. He went 30 minutes and showed some flashes of his usual self.

Offseason acquisitions Gustav Svensson and Will Bruin started at defensive midfield and forward, respectively, while Academy players Shandon Hopeau and Jake Morris each saw the field as well. Homegrown signings Seyi Adekoya and Henry Wingo started the second half and played the full 45 minutes.

Sounders regulars Osvaldo Alonso and Roman Torres did not play, nor did Jordan Morris, Chad Marshall and Brad Evans, who were just released from the United States national team following their 1-0 friendly win over Jamaica on Friday in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Sounders will continue their preseason in Tucson with a scrimmage against the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday (9:30 a.m. PT; SoundersFC.com).
