Few teams in North American sports enjoy a home-field advantage quite like the Seattle Sounders.
Sounders FC’s dominance at Lumen Field dates back to the club’s inaugural match in 2009. Seattle announced themselves to the world by trouncing reigning MLS Cup finalists 3-0 in front of 30,000 fans. It was the first of many moments that has forged Seattle’s reputation as a dreaded destination for visiting teams.
“Being from the opposite team coming to Lumen, it's a place where it's hard to play,” said winger Jesús Ferreira. “The fans are always behind you. It's always a good crowd.”
Fast forward to 2026, the Sounders’ home form is better than ever. After falling 2-0 to reigning UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint Germain in FIFA Club World Cup 2025 on June 23, the Sounders have gone 20 matches unbeaten at home, marking the longest streak in club history (MLS era).
“We've got a good squad,” said Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. “The competition for playing time is going to continue to drive it. Last year, I think there was a similar message, maybe a little different. You know, the Club World Cup certainly was that carrot. I think they worked towards that and obviously that propelled us to a good second half of the year. This year, the team has come really well out of the gate. So, kudos to the players.”

The Sounders have won all four of their home matches at Lumen Field this year, scoring 11 goals while conceding just three. Their imperious home form combined with their dominance on the road (3-1-2), have them sitting third in the Western Conference on points per game with 2.22, just shy of the Vancouver Whitecaps (2.5) and San Jose Earthquakes (2.55).
Beginning on May 9, the Sounders will look to maintain their supremacy at Lumen Field and take control of the West as the team embarks on a three-match homestand against San Diego FC, the Earthquakes (May 13) and LA Galaxy (May 16).
“We know that we have two games less than most of the teams in the West, but I believe if we win the two games in hand, we're in second, a couple points behind San Jose, and we do play them,” said midfielder Albert Rusnák. “So I think this stretch of these next three home games, and then to end LAFC away, you know, those will be huge games. It could decide whether the Supporter Shield will be still on after the break.”

The three-match week marks the final slate of home matches before FIFA World Cup 2026 takes over North America and the Emerald City in June. Following Seattle’s May 16 fixture, the team won’t play at home until July 16, when they host their bitter rivals, the Portland Timbers.
“You got three home games in eight days, which is better, if you have a three game week all at home…that gives us a little bit of advantage,” said Schmetzer. “The importance of winning the first game, coming out in the right way, will dictate changes for the mid-week and then the end of the week.”
The perfect sendoff before the league-wide break, the Sounders will need their supporters to fuel them as they face off against three hard-nosed opponents.
“It's like [having] an extra man,” said Ferreira.
