MLS Playoff Scenarios: Vancouver Whitecaps seek second straight berth

Vancouver Whitecaps FC can clinch their second consecutive postseason berth with a win or a draw on Wednesday night at home against FC Dallas, one of two midweek Major League Soccer games with huge postseason implications.

The Whitecaps need a win or a draw against FCD to clinch their postseason berth, and a win would boost them from third place to the top of the standings in the Western Conference heading into the international break this weekend. FC Dallas clinched a berth in the postseason on Oct. 4 and currently sit in second place in the West, one point behind the first-place LA Galaxy.

In the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Impact can significantly help their chances of getting back to the postseason for the first time since 2013 with a win over the host New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night. The Impact will clinch a berth with a win against RBNY and a win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, the only MLS game of the weekend.

The are also Supporters’ Shield implications on the line at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday, and Sounders FC are one of a host of teams who can be officially eliminated from the Shield race if the Red Bulls win. With three more points, the Red Bulls would eliminate the Sounders, Columbus Crew SC, Portland Timbers and New England Revolution from Shield contention.

The Sounders won their first-ever Supporters’ Shield last season. The last team to win the Supporters’ Shield in back-to-back seasons was the 2010-11 LA Galaxy.
