To be a Sounder means to having a never-quit mentality. Midfielder Paul Rothrock embodied that ethos in Sunday night’s Home Opener win over the Colorado Rapids.
“He was fantastic,” said Head Coach Brian Schmetzer.
In the 15th minute of the match, it looked as if the ball was going to go out for a throw-in near the left sideline. But Rothrock produced a lung-busting, 30-yard sprint to keep the ball in play. From there, the Seattle local curled a beautiful ball into the box for midfielder Albert Rusnák to redirect with his head into the back of the net to give the Rave Green the lead.
“His hustle to keep the ball in play, and then his delivery of that cross for Albert's header…he's always ready…That kid is always ready,” said Schmetzer.
Then, in the 63rd minute, Rothrock took his own opportunity in front of the net. Following a through ball from forward Osaze De Rosario, winger Jesús Ferreira passed the ball across the face of goal for Rothrock to finish one-time to extend the lead to 2-0.
“That might have been the best sub I made the whole game,” said Schmetzer. “Paul came on and did exactly what he always does.”
Moments like these serve as a reminder of the hard work Rothrock has put in to make massive contributions like the ones shown in tonight’s victory.
The 27-year-old went from getting released at Toronto FC, the Sounders MLS NEXT Pro side Tacoma Defiance taking a chance on him, to becoming a star for his hometown team.
“I think that [resilience has] been a bit of my calling card,” said Rothrock. “And I also think that's part of this club, and I hope to try and embody some of the characteristics that this club strives for and has continued to show.”
In a previous interview, Rothrock talked about how he’s always had an under-dog mindset as he’s navigated his playing career, but since his recent contract renewal, it’s become less about proving he can compete at the highest level and more about elevating his game even further.
His performance against the Rapids was a glimpse of just how influential he can be as he looks to maintain this strong run of form into the upcoming marathon of away matches.
“I think it's always good to get one under your belt, and I think it gives you some momentum going into the next week,” said Rothrock. “But RSL is going to be a whole different match, a whole different battle.”
“This week's going to bring new challenges, and I'm glad I came off healthy today and ready to go for next week. Here we go.”
