Rave Report: Injuries strike young pair

Damion Lowe

Seattle’s influx of promising young talent took a blow this week when defender Damion Lowe and forward Kevin Parsemain both suffered injuries that will have them out for some time.

Lowe underwent hip surgery in Colorado on Monday and will be expected to miss four months, while Parsemain suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s reserve game against Oregon State University, leaving him out for six to seven months.

Lowe’s injury popped up suddenly in recent weeks as discomfort, but ended up being more serious.

“Damion in one practice a couple of weeks ago felt a little pull and so we rested him for a little bit to see how he’s reacting to it,” Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid said. “It wasn’t getting any better, so we did an MRI and found a tear in the MRI.”

Lowe was Seattle’s first pick (8th overall) in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft after a four-year career at the University of Hartford. While he may not play for four months, Schmid said he will likely be back in training within six to eight weeks.

Parsemain, meanwhile, will have surgery once the swelling in his knee subsides and he gets his range of motion back. The 26-year-old forward from Martinique had a solid preseason for Seattle, scoring three goals to co-lead the team and has added two more goals in three reserve matches against college opponents.

The untimely injuries won’t affect the loans of David Estrada, Eriq Zavaleta or Jimmy Ockford in the near future, but they may eventually be recalled if the need arises.

“We always have options with those guys,” Schmid said. “Right now, in the short term, it doesn’t really change anything. It might change things long term.”

EVANS AND ROSE MAKE PROGRESS

Brad Evans has missed the last three games with a calf contusion and Andy Rose has sat out the past two games with a hamstring injury. While they haven’t fully rejoined the rest of the team in training, they are both making progress toward that end, according to Schmid.

“Both are doing better. Evans, we’re being really slow with this week because he has a tendency to push too hard, too quick,” Schmid said. “We want to make sure that if he’s not ready for Dallas this week, that he’ll definitely be ready for Chivas next weekend.”
