The Seattle Sounders defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, on Thursday night in the first leg of their Round of 16 Concacaf Champions Cup matchup. Paul Arriola recorded a brace on either side of halftime before Paul Rothrock, who came on as a substitute to replace Arriola, added a goal of his own.
The Sounders had a golden chance in the 14th minute when Jesús Ferreira crossed a ball into the middle that defender Tristan Blackmon whiffed on, leaving Arriola alone in front of goal. Arriola was caught off guard by Blackmon’s stumble, however, and his shot was saved from point-blank range by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.
Albert Rusnák took a free kick quickly from 30 yards out in the 23rd minute looking to catch the ‘Caps napping while they set up defensively. Rusnák’s curling attempt just veered wide of the far post.
Nouhou came up with a massive goal-line clearance in the 32nd minute when he darted back to stab away a Thomas Müller effort that seemed destined for the far post.
Blackmon found an opportunity from 12 yards out off a Whitecaps corner in the 38th minute, but he skied his contested half-volley over the crossbar.
Arriola gave the Sounders a crucial away goal to open the scoring in the 45th minute when Ferreira pounced on a mishit back pass from Mathías Laborda. Ferreira drove toward goal and drew out Takaoka before laying a simple dropped pass into the feet of his former FC Dallas teammate, who fired home a one-timed finish from the center of the box.
Arriola earned his brace and doubled the Sounders’ lead in the 58th minute on the end of a counterattack led by Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, who whipped in a dangerous low cross. Édier Ocampo slid to intercept the cross, but it deflected off Takaoka before Arriola got the final touch to redirect it into the net.
Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei stood on his head in the 69th minute to keep the Sounders’ lead at two. He reacted quickly and dove to his right to deny a difficult Laborda header off a corner.
Rothrock iced the match a minute later after Ferreira clipped a ball into the Whitecaps’ half for Cristian Roldan, who played a beautiful through ball looking for Danny Musovski. The ball skipped just past a sliding Musovski, but it fell to a crashing Rothrock at the back post, and the Capitol Hill native buried Seattle’s third.
Vancouver had a last-gasp effort in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Müller spun for a half-volley in the box, but his attempt rattled the crossbar.
Thursday’s win was an emphatic result for the Sounders against their Cascadia rivals, which had been unbeaten in five matches in all competitions in 2026 including being one of four MLS teams to win its first three league contests.
The Sounders return to MLS action for a Sunday night showdown at the San Jose Earthquakes (4 p.m. PT; Apple TV) before hosting the ‘Caps in the second leg at ONE Spokane Stadium in Spokane, Wash., on Thursday (8 p.m. PT; FS2, TUDN).
THREE TAKEAWAYS
Halfway home
The Sounders take a commanding 3-0 lead back to the United States in their two-legged aggregate series with the ‘Caps. Seattle also has three crucial away goals, the first tiebreaker, meaning the Whitecaps will need a three-goal win of 4-1 win or greater in Leg 2 to advance outright. The winner of this tie will take on the winner of FC Cincinnati and Liga MX’s Tigres, a series in which Cincinnati won 3-0 at home in the first leg earlier on Thursday.
Arriola redemption
One year and one day to the date that Arriola tore his ACL against Cruz Azul in last year’s Round of 16 CCC match, he made his first start and bagged his first two goas since the injury. Arriola now has four career goals for the Sounders, all of which have come in CCC play.
Frei clean sheet
Frei made his first appearance of 2026 with a strong showing in helping keep Vancouver off the score sheet. The legendary Sounders goalkeeper won the Golden Ball and Golden Glove awards in the 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup as the tournament’s best player and goalkeeper, respectively, as Seattle became the first MLS team to win the modern edition of the competition.
