On Sunday, the Indiana University men’s soccer team defeated the University of Michigan 3-0 to take home the Big Ten Tournament Championship. Guided by Sounders Academy alum Trey Muse in goal, the Hoosiers secured the Big Ten regular season and postseason double for the first time since 2006.
After a breakout freshman campaign, in which he led the nation in every goalkeeping statistic as Indiana marched to the NCAA Championship match, Muse’s development has kicked up a notch in his sophomore season. Prior to the start of the Conference Tournament, Muse was named the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year for 2018.
“I feel like I’ve made good strides throughout the offseason and coming into the season,” Muse said in a phone interview prior to the Big Ten Tournament semifinal. “I’ve hit on things I wanted to work on. So, I think the season is going well and I’m progressing the way I want to. The team is getting a lot of wins and good results, it’s a great thing to be a part of.”
Muse, who spent two seasons in Sounders Academy, carried the Hoosiers into the Big Ten Tournament final, as he produced two stunning saves in a penalty kick shootout with Maryland in the semifinal round. He wasn’t called upon to make too many saves in the final against the Wolverines, a sign of his improving ability to organize a backline, which is something he cited as a facet of his game that he’s enhanced this season.
With the Big Ten double under their belt, the Hoosiers enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 overall seed. Muse and IU will face the winner of UConn and Rhode Island on Sunday, November 18.
“Individually, I want to make sure that I hold myself and my teammates to a high standard,” Muse said. “I just want to play my role and not overcomplicate things. Collectively, I’d love to win this Big Ten Championship and make a push for the NCAA Championship. To win all three trophies would be amazing.”
Muse and the Hoosiers have already secured two trophies, and the quest for the third begins on Sunday.
