Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall recovering from sprained neck, return unclear -

Seattle Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall suffered a sprained neck during training on Wednesday and has been discharged from the hospital to continue his recovery, the club announced on Thursday.

Marshall sustained the injury near the end of the team’s training session at the team’s Starfire practice facility in Tukwila, and was taken to nearby Virginia Mason Medical Center for a comprehensive battery of medical tests and protocols. He was then released to the care of his family, and has been resting at home on Thursday.

A timeline for Marshall’s return has not been determined, and head coach Sigi Schmid is expected to address the media following the team’s next scheduled training session on Friday to discuss the injury.

Marshall took to his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night to tell fans that he was recovering, and to thank them for the outpouring of support.

Marshall, 31, has appeared in 27 games this year, his second season with the Sounders since coming over from Columbus Crew SC last year. He was named the MLS Defender of the Year last season, the third such honor of his 12-year MLS career.

The Sounders host the LA Galaxy at Century Link Field on Sunday (6:30 p.m. PT / FOX Sports 1, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM), their first home game in nearly a month and the only meeting in Seattle this season between the two Western Conference rivals.
