Sounders FC midfielder Marco Pappa scored his 11th career international goal on Tuesday night and Guatemala downed El Salvador 4-2 in penalties after the two teams played to a 1-1 stalemate in regulation in an international friendly at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
Pappa found the back of the net in the 30th minute with a left-footed blast from the top of the box, then celebrated with a trademark backflip.
The lead didn’t last, however, as El Salvador rallied with a goal in the 69th minute from midfielder Ibsen Castro to force the draw.
Pappa left the game with an undisclosed injury in the 36th minute. The game marked his 46th career appearance for Guatemala, which will open CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying in November. Guatemala is in Group C, along with the United States, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
