SEATTLE, WASH. - Seattle Sounders FC forward Clint Dempsey has been voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 19 of the 2017 MLS season. Dempsey recorded two goals and an assist in a 3-1 road win over the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Dempsey put Seattle up early with a sixth-minute strike, converting cleanly past Rapids goalkeeper and USMNT teammate Tim Howard on an assist from Joevin Jones. He helped Will Bruin make it 2-0 in the 30th minute, taking a deft touch on an over-the-top pass from Nicolás Lodeiro to settle the ball for Bruin inside the area for a strong finish. After Colorado pulled one back in the second half, the Nacogdoches native sealed the match in the 85th minute with a world-class half-volley from 20 yards out that sailed over Howard and into the back of the net.
Following Tuesday's match, Dempsey leads Sounders FC with seven goals this season, in addition to a pair of assists. His second goal against Colorado was his 41st with Sounders FC, passing Obafemi Martins for second on the club's all-time list, six behind Fredy Montero's record of 47.
The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
