Independent Panel rescinds Torres red card

Roman Torres at MTL 170315

SEATTLE, WASH. – Major League Soccer today announced that Sounders FC defender Román Torres’ red card from the Sounders FC-LA Galaxy match on Sunday has been rescinded by the Independent Panel. The Independent Panel, consisting of one representative from the United States Soccer Federation, one representative from the Canadian Soccer Association, and one representative from the Professional Referee Organization, has unanimously rescinded the one-game suspension and accompanying fine for the red card issued to Torres for denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity in the 89th minute of Seattle’s match against the LA Galaxy on September 9 (VIDEO).

As a result of the appeal, Torres is eligible to play in Seattle’s next regular season match against FC Dallas on Saturday, September 16 (5:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Univision-Seattle, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

Each club is entitled to two unsuccessful appeals per season, including playoffs. Since Seattle’s appeal was successful, the team maintains two unsuccessful appeals for any future dismissals in the 2017 season.

After a 1-1 draw against LA last weekend, Brian Schmetzer’s club hits the road to face FC Dallas on Saturday evening (5:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Univision-Seattle, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM), putting its club-record 12-match unbeaten run on the line with an opportunity to jump back into first place in the Western Conference.
