Gustav Svensson, Sweden fall to England at 2018 FIFA World Cup on Saturday

Gustav Svensson vs. Switzerland

He's coming home.

After a memorable run to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals, Gustav Svensson and Sweden fell to England by a score of 2-0 on Saturday morning. Svensson, the Sounders midfielder who became the last MLS player remaining in the tournament, didn't see the field, but was an option on the bench. Harry Maguire gave England a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, then the Three Lions extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Dele Alli in the 58th minute.

Despite not playing in this contest, it was still a fruitful tournament for Svensson. A fringe player on the national team's radar just a year ago, the 31-year-old defensive midfielder was called-in during FIFA World Cup qualifiers and made the final squad. In all, he made three appearances, including a start, in the world's biggest sporting tournament.
