MLS is officially back.
The league’s opening weekend was spotlighted by a series of highlight reel goals, including long-range stunners and acrobatic finishes inside the box.
Even though there were a slew of fantastic goals in Week 1 of the 2021 season, it should come as no surprise that João Paulo’s ridiculous side volley into the top corner – which Head Coach Brian Schmetzer dubbed “a technical masterpiece” – has been nominated for Goal of the Week honors. As soon as the Brazilian’s side-winder hit the back of the net, it immediately became a top contender for Goal of the Year, let alone the weekly award. It even earned the No. 1 spot on Sports Center's Top 10 Plays on Friday night.
