Sounders FC 2 falls 2-1 to Real Monarchs SLC despite second-half goal from Pablo Rossi

Monarchs FINAL

SANDY, UTAH – Seattle Sounders FC 2 (12-10-3, 39 points) fell 2-1 on the road to Real Monarchs SLC (4-13-8, 20 points) after conceding two first-half goals. Pablo Rossi scored his eighth tally of the season in the 72nd minute, but the Rave Green were unable to find the net again before fulltime.

The Monarchs opened scoring in the 22nd minute via Ricardo Velasco. Emery Welshman was put through on goal, but goalkeeper Charlie Lyon denied the initial effort. The rebound from Welshman’s shot fell to Velasco, who placed his shot into the empty net to make it 1-0 for the home side.

Following an S2 corner-kick in first-half added time, the Monarchs replied with a counterattack, as Eti Tavares beat the S2 backline at midfield and ran one-on-one toward goal with just Lyon to beat. Tavares made no mistake, beating Lyon to the keeper’s right to double his club’s lead before the halftime whistle.

Rossi scored his team-high eighth goal in the 72nd minute, picking up a deflected pass 30 yards from goal. Rossi picked his head up and took aim from distance, deflecting a shot off the left post to beat goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez.

S2 remains in the postseason hunt, trailing only LA Galaxy II and Oklahoma City Energy FC in the USL Western Conference. The Rave Green travel to Austin Aztex on Monday, September 5 for the third contest of a three-match road swing against the Texan side. Kickoff for S2’s next match is slated for 5:30 p.m. PT and is being live-streamed on SoundersFC.com
