Portland's Record: The Timbers are eighth in the West at 4-5-9 (21 points) and are 3-3-2 on the road.

Head-To-Head: The only prior MLS meeting this season ended in a 4-4 draw on April 5 at Providence Park. The teams also met in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday at Starfire, with Seattle advancing on a 3-1 win in extra time. The final regular season matchup will come on August 24 in Portland.

All-Time Series: Seattle leads the MLS series with a 3-2-4 record. In all competitions since Portland joined MLS in 2011, they are even at 4-4-4. Dating back to the North American Soccer League clashes that started in 1975 and including matches in the WSL, USL and MLS, Seattle holds a 43-31-12 edge.

Key Player: Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts posted a league-best 14 shutouts in 2013, finishing with a 0.97 goals against average. This year, he has been less dominant with just one shutout in 16 matches and a 1.39 goals against average. However, he is still capable of making highlight-reel saves and has done well in his 10 career starts against Seattle, posting a 1.04 lifetime goals against average against Sounders FC.

Notes: Portland will be without midfielder Diego Chara, who will be serving a one-match suspension for yellow-card accumulation. … Seattle will likely see the return of Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin in their first regular season matches since appearing in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Dempsey captained the U.S. National Team and scored two goals to help it reach the Round of 16 while Yedlin was a breakout star, playing 112 minutes in three substitute appearances. … Both teams are looking for their first wins in the 2014 Cascadia Cup series. Vancouver leads at 2-0-1 with Seattle second at 0-1-2 and Portland third at 0-1-1. … This is Seattle’s first match at CenturyLink Field since a 4-0 trouncing of Real Salt Lake on May 31. In the meantime, the Sounders have gone 2-1-0 in three regular season road matches and advanced to the semifinal of the U.S. Open Cup with three matches at Starfire Stadium. … This will be the second match of the season in which CenturyLink Field will be opened to its full capacity. Sounders FC topped the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 in front of a crowd of 49,746.
