Parra opened the scoring with a volleyed finish in the 21st minute and the hosts never looked back, getting additional insurance from Mathers in the 38th and Chenkam in the 51st to seal the result.
S2 jumped on top with Parra’s sixth goal of the season in the 21st minute after Whitecaps 2 couldn’t clear a corner kick from Mathers, allowing the ball to pop free in front of their own goal. Parra pounced on the rebound and hammered a volley past Vancouver goalkeeper and former University of Washington standout Spencer Richey, staking S2 to a 1-0 first-half lead.
Mathers doubled the advantage in the 38th minute after he made a sliding challenge to dispossess Richey right in front of goal and tapped home the finish. It was the second-year Duke product’s team-leading ninth goal of the season. He now has 12 career tallies for the Sounders’ USL affiliate since he was selected in the second round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.
Chenkam bagged S2’s final tally of the evening in the 51st with a rocket finish past Richey off a feed from Parra to make it 3-0. S2 played the final five minutes plus stoppage time up a man after Vancouver’s Myer Bevan was shown a straight red card for kicking Mathers.
S2 moved to 8-13-2 on the season, snapped a six-match losing skid and gave the club a welcome bounce-back result after last weekend’s 4-3 defeat to the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. S2 now has another Cascadia derby on the docket, with a road matchup against Portland Timbers 2 at Providence Park on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
